Best ERP Options for Mid-Market Distribution / Manufacturing Companies?

Over the years, many of Rubenstein / Justman Management Consultants (RJMC) clients have been distribution and manufacturing companies.  Those that had dated or “legacy” systems are often highly customized which makes the decision process surrounding the selection of a new or upgraded ERP even a greater challenge . . . but one we are up for!

That being said, what are the best ERP alternative systems to consider for a mid-market distribution / manufacturing company?

In no particular order, top ERP systems for mid-market distribution and manufacturing include Epicor Kinetic/Prophet 21, Acumatica, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite, and Infor CloudSuite. These systems offer strong financial management, procurement, supply chain planning, inventory management, production scheduling tailored for growing businesses.

Top Mid-Market ERP Systems

  • Acumatica Cloud ERP: A versatile, user-friendly cloud system popular for its adaptable, growth-friendly licensing.  Beware that Acumatica implementation can be complex and challenging when customizations are required.  Acumatica also relies upon a unique consumption-based (transaction volume) licensing model as opposed to one that is based upon user count.

  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC): An all-in-one platform known for deep integration with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Excel).  Business Central is the next evolution of Microsoft Dynamics 365 NAV which sunsets in 2028.  What made NAV so popular was its ease of customization which was the bread-and-butter for many Microsoft Partners.  A good platform in the past but don’t expect to find all of your customizations in BC meaning a full new implementation awaits you .

  • Oracle NetSuite: A top cloud-based, multi-entity solution for finance-heavy distributors and manufacturers.  Definitely the most effectively marketed ERP and in many ways it lives up to the hype but the key is finding an implementation partner that understands your business and can translate your requirements into a system configuration that works for you.

  • Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine): Known for robust production scheduling and industry-specific functionality.  A comprehensive ERP system for manufacturing but common negatives include a steep learning curve, an outdated user interface, and complex, costly implementations

  • Epicor Kinetic/Prophet 21: Highly specialized for manufacturing (Kinetic) and distribution (Prophet 21), handling complex, niche industry requirements.  Solid functionality but common negatives include high total cost of ownership, steep learning curves due to complex user interfaces (UI), and reported performance issues in the cloud, particularly with reporting.

  • Sage X3/Intacct: Suitable for global, multi-currency manufacturers and distributors.  Look to Sage Intacct if your needs are more financial than operational.  Sage X3 grew out of a French company Adonix back in 1979 but the system was rebuilt in 1997 and acquired by Sage in 2005.  It looks and feels Microsoftish which reduces the user learning curve.  Implementation costs can be high because of reliance on 3rd-party Value-Added Resellers.

  • Odoo: A cost-effective, open-source choice suited for smaller mid-market businesses.  With the appropriate technical resources Odoo can answer your needs but more often than not, expect a steep learning curve, high customization complexity that can require expensive external experts, and potentially down-the-road costly version upgrades.
